Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board Seeks a Destination Management & Marketing Organization

By Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board

On November 14, 2024, the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board (JHTTB) approved and published a request for proposals (RFP) for an organization to serve as the primary Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO) for Jackson Hole. The purpose of the RFP is to contract a 501(c)3 nonprofit to oversee management, marketing, development, and stewardship for the destination.

Why Jackson Hole Needs a DMMO

Teton County’s Sustainable Destination Management Plan (SDMP), adopted by the JHTTB in January 2023, highlighted the need for a cohesive governance structure to balance tourism’s economic benefits with the needs of the community and the preservation of the environment.

Under its current structure, the JHTTB contracts individual organizations and agencies to carry out the work of the seven-member, all-volunteer Board. The Board manages seven contracts to oversee day-to-day operations, five contracts to market the destination, and more than 15 contracts that oversee visitor services, communications, and community engagement efforts. By contracting with a single Destination Management and Marketing Organization, the JHTTB can avoid gaps and overlaps with multiple contracts and carry out a more robust scope of work.

How We Got Here

Jackson Hole has discussed a cohesive governance structure for this premeir tourist destination for over a decade. In 2023, the JHTTB began a 6-month strategic planning phase involving the Destination Stewardship Council, the JHTTB, legal council from Deputy County Attorney Keith Gingery, and input from the hospitality industry, government agencies, elected officials, and the community. The JHTTB continues to explore the best possible options for tourism governance for Jackson Hole in open, public meetings.

Addressing Community Concerns

The JHTTB welcomed public comment and community input in public meetings about the DMMO process. Through this process, the JHTTB was able to identify common concerns and continues to take them into considertion while exploring the best options to move forward.

Why did the JHTTB receive two proposals in response to the RFP?

Jackson Hole is a unique destination, and running a Destination Marketing and Management Organization for the destination would require a very specific and advanced set of skills and experience to carry out a specialized and robust scope of work. In the research phase of this process, Crosscurrent Collective hosted interviews with similar destinations who also noted limited, specialized employees who complete their scope of work.

Will JHTTB Board members, past or present, benefit from contracting a DMMO?

The answer to this question will depend on how the JHTTB decides to move forward in the DMMO process, but the Board is dedicated to proceeding with a path that will be best for the community and the destination. As this is very specialized work, selecting contractors and organizations with previous experience in tourism and the Jackson Hole market will be important.

The current DMMO proposal from Jackson Hole Destination Alliance proposes that previous JHTTB Board members involved would act as volunteer Board members of the 501(c)3 Alliance, for which they would not receive any compensation.
