Recreate Responsibly Toolkit

A Guide to Summer Stewardship for Jackson Hole Locals
In May, the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board (JHTTB) released a Responsible Recreation Toolkit, designed to empower locals to be stewards of Jackson Hole and surrounding public lands.
The toolkit, complete with talking points, social media posts, email text, an FAQ, and a visitor handout, is part of a community-wide effort to encourage sustainable tourism in Jackson Hole. But it's also a reminder to locals of their important role in protecting and preserving our home.

Based on requests from local land partners and collaboration from the Destination Stewardship Council, the JHTTB distilled the beastly topic of “responsible recreation” into four consumable messages:
- Wildlife safety
- Bascamp basics
- Know before you go
- Keep Jackson Hole Wild
Each message is associated with talking points and marketing assets that are quick, impactful, and digestable. This toolkit makes it easy to weave responsible visitation messaging into everyday conversations.
Since its release, the toolkit has been presented at three community workshops and directly to more than 15 local hopsitality businesses. Cohesively integrating these messages into visitor touchpoints across the community is the key to success. If a visitor hears the same message about exinguishing a campfire through email and social media pre-arrival, in a face-to-face interaction at their hotel and the Visitor Center, and in-person on the trailhead, they’re more likely to comply.
Research shows that most visitors want to do the right thing in the places they’re recreating—they just need a little help. As stewards of Jackson Hole, we each play a role in protecting our most valuable assets: our environment and our community.
Bottom line: Jackson Hole stays wild when we all pitch in—with respect, kindness, and a little local know-how.
The JHTTB encourages local businesses to explore the Responsible Recreation Toolkit and print the FAQs to have on hand at your business.
